Drew McDonald discovered his passion for sculpture through formal studies in Visual Art at the University of Tasmania and Griffith QCA Brisbane, alongside training in several well-regarded ateliers where he developed both traditional and contemporary sculptural techniques. After publicly unveiling his practice in 2024, this now multiple award-winning emerging artist has quickly stepped into the spotlight. Informed by Dada, Surrealism, and Pop Art, McDonald creates absurd yet thought-provoking amalgamations of familiar forms — sculptures that merge the iconic and the irrational in ways that both amuse and unsettle. Through these playful yet incisive works, he invites viewers to pause and reflect on their place in this absurd existence: “We are literally floating around in infinity on a rock, surrounded by a thin gas shield that is protecting us from the giant nuclear reactor in the sky that also gives us life”.
